Within us, we each hold beautiful yet imperfect stories. When expressed through art, these stories make connections that build our collective understanding of the world.
I experiment using leather-hard clay as one source of experimentation. As the clay begins to dry, I embed porcelain tile. Tesserae is cut to create a constructed line. Each phase of the process is a challenge. I enjoy the uncertainty as the pieces dry and the images endure extreme heat in the kiln. My satisfaction is derived from the process. Knowledge is gained even when the work is lost. It teaches me creative ways of addressing the materiality of clay. Fragility and stability become physical problems to solve, and each building phase is transitory and brief. Surfaces of tile are further added with predictable outcomes. The final works built on a collection of techniques informed by ceramic traditions, but also evoke Baroque ideas of drama, exaggeration, elaborate ornamentation enclosed in mythology.
