Mosaic Cats
The cat sculptures originated in the mid 1990’s from a proposal for sculptures for the Humane Society of WI, a cat and dog. The project did not move forward and I had already made a 2-part mold. My mold was used to clean excess mortar off my tools and bowls and soon realized I could build with the mortar supporting it with fiberglass mesh to create my own substrate. Each cat has a personality and tells a different story. Some have names. Since they are concrete, they are durable for all seasons, inside or outside your home.
The cats are still made using this technique today. They are hollow 3-part forms, each individually made with surfaces of stained glass, stone, dinnerware and found object. I use a direct application process of a French technique called Pique Assiette. Stolen place or broken plate are two translations for this technique.
